Houston is the most populous city in the US state of Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 2.239 million[5] within an area of 667 square miles (1,730 km2), it is also the largest city in the southern US, Located in Southeast Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, it was founded in 1836.

Houston is renowned as the only major US city with technically no zoning regulations, and in recent decades has been distinguished for its high rate of new housing development and comparatively low housing prices, but also high transportation costs and energy consumption per capita.
