While Fort Lawton was a quiet outpost prior to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II World War II], it became the second largest port of embarkation of soldiers and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Materiel materiel] to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_War Pacific Theater] during the war. The fort was included in the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base_Realignment_and_Closure,_2005 2005 Base Realignment and Closure list]. Fort Lawton officially closed on September 14, 2011.
