[[File:Seattlebikes.jpg|right|Dockless bikes in Seattle]]Dockless bike sharing is an increasingly widespread and popular form of bike sharing. Unlike standard kiosk-based bike sharing in which rented bikes are collected from and secured in purpose-built, specifically designated hubs or docks, dockless bikes are distributed through their service areas. Riders locate, purchase, and unlock the bikes that are part of a dockless network with their smartphones. The bikes, tracked by GPS are typically secured by a locking mechanism on the rear wheels, that is released upon rental. Since securing the dockless bicycles isn't dependent on location users can locate them anywhere throughout their service area, can travel anywhere within the service area and once they've finished riding can, in theory, park the bike anywhere.

In Asia and in China, in particular, dockless bike sharing is the predominant form of bicycle sharing. As of this writing (2017), dockless bike sharing, spearheaded by small startups and expanding Asian bike sharing companies, has so far only debuted a small number of cities in Europe and North America, where it is a new development.

*Fears raised in the communities about the dockless bicycles being strewn about the city streets (as has happened in Chinese cities) making extra work for city maintenance employees, blocking pedestrian thoroughfares, creating an eyesore and presenting tripping hazards
*Concerns around access for those who may not have a smartphone (as dockless bike services are dependent on networked mobile phone use and perhaps even more dependent on this form of technology than kiosk-based services)
